A Fun Craft to do at Home!

Fall has officially started which means colder weather is on the way. When it’s too cold to play outside, try spending your day making a cool camp craft to remind you of warmer days. This summer, NACster campers participated in a very special activity. They created their very own rockets and launched them into space! Because not all of our campers were in NACster or present during that week, Camp NAC wanted to show everyone how they can make their very own rockets to launch at home!

The materials to do so are as follows:

  • Water bottle
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Paper towel
  • Cork attached to plank of wood

Launching your own rockets requires a five-step process:

  1. Decorate your water bottle
  2. Pour vinegar into your water bottle
  3. Wrap baking soda in a paper towel
  4. Drop the wrapped baking soda into your water bottle
  5. Quickly place water bottle over cork

Step 1:

Everybody knows that rocket ships are not clear! Before your water bottle can truly become a rocket, you must decorate it however you like to make your dream rocket ship. IMG_1883

Step 2:

Pouring vinegar into your rocket allows a chemical reaction to occur, which causes your rocket to launch. Without vinegar, you would simply have a water bottle filled with baking soda and a paper towel. How boring. IMG_1884

Step 3:

Wrapping the baking soda in a paper towel allows you to have enough time to place your rocket onto the launchpad. If you were to simply pour the baking soda into your rocket, the reaction would happen too quickly and you would not be able to place the rocket on the onto the launchpad in time.

Step 4:

Place the wrapped baking soda in your rocket. This causes a chemical reaction between the baking soda and the vinegar. This chemical reaction is reason your rocket is able to launch.

Step 5:

Placing your rocket onto the cork makes the chemical reaction possible. When the rocket is on the cork, enough pressured is formed due to the chemical reaction between the vinegar and baking soda, causing your rocket to launch into space! Be sure to place the rocket onto the cork quickly and back away to give the rocket plenty of room to launch off.

We suggest an adult does steps 4 and 5.
